Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea celebrates Hawaiian independence! Each year teachers, farmers, healers, artists, entrepreneurs and others organize a free, public event to activate ea and to educate our communities about historical and contemporary issues related to Hawaiian lands, waters and sovereignty. King Kamehameha III established ka Lā Hoʻihoʻi as the first national holiday of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1843, and it was revived in 1986 by a handfull of ground-breaking kānaka aloha ʻāina. All of the proceeds from your purchase go toward continuing the celebration of this Hawaiian national holiday. This year, the month-long celebration included a community imu, a poetry festival, an education conference for independence-minded teachers, and a mālama ʻāina day in Kahana. All of these events remain free because of your support.
Each year LHE Honolulu also honor two kūpuna who have dedicated their lives to serving their ʻāina and people. This year's honorees are Dr. Haunani-Kay Trask and Aunty Judy Napoleon. Strong and beautiful, these women grace this year's t-shirt design with their images.
Mahalo for supporting ka Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea at Thomas Square!
